Dower & Hall Co-Founder Talks Best-Sellers, Bespoke Designs and IJL 2018

Long-time IJL exhibitor, Dower & Hall, is enjoying a busy year of digital updates, new sterling silver collections and a step into bespoke design for its loyal fans.

Here, co-founder and design director, Dan Dower, explains what has been going on behind-the-scenes in 2018.

What have the last 12 months been like for Dower & Hall and what have been your most successful collections?

We’ve had a successful year as we’ve relaunched our website, which hasn’t been without its challenges, but has meant we’ve been able to bring in new innovations to improve our customer experience. We’ve also worked closely with our stockists to provide a great brand experience, from special events to new display, photography and social media support.

As always, our pearls and designs with our signature hammered finish have continued to do well. Pearls and bridal have been a key area with us and our wedding events and strong coverage in bridal magazines have strengthened this for us.

Dower & Hall Cascade collection

Lockets historically have always been a great seller for us. Our newly launched Lumiere collection worked very well for us, these new designs allow customers to add their own images and this has made them a big hit.

They make great gifts and are a lovely treasured keepsake. We expected the small heart and round locket to be the best sellers, but in fact it was our large oval design that exceeded expectations.

Glamour Spring Zoella 2018 B

We’ve been thrilled to see our designs in magazines like Cosmopolitan, Glamour and OK! and also worn by stars Zoella and Perrie Edwards at the Brit Awards (pictured above).

What newness will you be presenting at IJL 2018 and what should visitors look out for?

This year at IJL we will be showing two new collections, alongside our classics. Jewel features individually hand-cut gemstones and takes inspiration from past collections that we had discontinued. We’ve brought back this style as we’ve had so many requests from customers who loved the designs and we suspect it will be a great Christmas seller.

We’ve also responded to demand and will be bringing our precious collections to IJL. Every piece is designed and handmade to order on our London workshop, from delicate classics to our new multi-stone Cascade collection in 18ct gold with precious gems.

You have lots of sterling silver collections but also precious collections and a bespoke service – do you see the potential for growth in the fine jewellery side of your business?

We pride ourselves on having a great variety of designs and products available and of course this does include precious collections. We are actually in the process of growing and streamlining our 18ct gold collections and making them more available for wholesale. This is a growing area for us and one that we would like to make more widely available.

Our bespoke service is a great opportunity for us to work on a one-on-one basis with our customers to create individual pieces, we do offer all of our customers the opportunity to have appointments in our stores or studio to do this.

We have the great advantage of our having our own in-house team of jewellers based in London and because of this we work on a large amount of made-to-order designs. Dan especially loves these projects and they can be a lot of fun and hugely varied.

They can vary from corporate gifts, for example for WPP plc, who are a British multi-national advertising and PR company and were looking to celebrate their 30th anniversary with a British brand and the gifts were sent to their customers and partners around the world.

And in a completely different style we designed the feather collection for the brand Kasabian and their limited-edition box set, not to mention the jewellery we designed for three Bond movies, which was very exciting. We have more partnerships lined up and coming soon, watch this space!

If you had to summarise Dower & Hall in a couple of sentences, what would you say?

Dower & Hall has been creating a wonderful world of fine jewellery since 1990 and we have become known for our easy-to-wear pieces that become treasured favourites. From personalised designs to timeless pearls and diamonds we know our collections are the perfect addition to your jewellery box.

You have been attending IJL for a number of years, what is it about the show that you like?

IJL has been in our calendars every year for so long, and I think that’s the case for so many in the industry that it’s the perfect opportunity to meet buyers and stockists from around the country. The new venue (Olympia) is so much nicer and a lovely working environment to be in and being in Central London is great, we’re looking forward to another successful show.

What do the next 12 months have in store for the brand?

We have lots of plans coming up, with Christmas nearing we will be launching our traditional Christmas Tree Charm, of course. We will also continue to work on our website so that it is an information hub for our customers and stockists as well as an online shop. We have some exciting plans for collections next year, but we can’t give too much away.

Bridal at IJL: Clogau on Royal Weddings, the Meghan-Effect and Engagement Rings

As part of International Jewellery London’s 2018 focus on all-things bridal, we spoke to Clogau managing director, Ben Roberts, to discover how the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has shaped the brand’s efforts this year.

Plus, he offers insights into the brand’s recently relaunched  Compose by Clogau®collection.

How did Clogau respond to the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and what do you think are the benefits of a royal wedding for British brands?

To commemorate the wedding of HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle Clogau launched a limited edition jewellery collection. Each piece of Windsor Pearl jewellery was limited to just 120 and set with freshwater pearls and white topaz in either yellow or rose gold. The scallop shell design was a truly fitting and elegant tribute to the British Royal Family and beautifully celebrated the wonderful royal wedding which will took place on 19th May 2018 at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

The Clogau Windsor Pearl jewellery collection.

We launched six limited edition Milestones Royal Clogau sterling silver and 9ct rose gold bead charms for the celebrations, which were limited to just 75 of each design. Plus, we hosted a live TV screening of the momentous occasion, along with wonderful offers at the Clogau flagship boutiques in Cardiff, Broughton and Westfield London.

How do you think the Meghan Markle effect is influencing jewellery?

There is no doubt that the new Duchess of Sussex is having a very successful influence on both fashion and jewellery. What we have seen is that the Duchess is usually styling smaller, daintier pieces and notably mix and matched with different designs and brands.

Wearing different, complementary pieces from different collections is a style we love to celebrate at Clogau. Although we have a number of different collections within our portfolio, each piece, whether from the same collection or not, will always complement another and can be worn together.

Our signature design and statement rose gold detail is what allows our customers to do this and enjoy styling their own look with our jewellery.

What bridal collections will Clogau be focusing on at IJL 2018?

Clogau unveiled new bridal ring styles as part of the Compose by Clogau® re-launch in early July. The re-launch follows months of research and planning to develop and perfect the bridal offering, including six new ring designs.

Compose by Clogau® enables brides-to-be the opportunity to discover their own bridal style, from romantic and elegant to glamorous and stylish, truly expressing their individuality and capturing the magic of their love story.

The re-launch also sees the bridal range available to purchase on Clogau’s website for the first time since its initial launch in 2014. Alongside the e-commerce website, the bridal rings are available to purchase at our St. David’s Cardiff, Westfield London and Broughton Shopping Park stores and via Compose by Clogau® retail partners.

Looking ahead to 2019, what can existing retail partners and new customers expect from Clogau in the coming months?

In 2019 Clogau will be celebrating 165 years since gold was discovered at the Clogau St David’s mine and 30 years since the Clogau brand was founded. The unique brand pillars of rare Welsh gold, heritage, storytelling and celebration will be highlighted throughout the year with exciting events and exclusive collections; more to be announced soon!

The Big Interview: Clogau on Welsh Gold, New Collections and its Secrets to Success

Award-winning jewellery brand Clogau has taken its Welsh gold message even further over the past 12 months, with a host of omni-channel innovations, new collections and a focus on brand marketing.

Here, managing director, Ben Roberts, explains what’s driving Clogau in 2018 and shares some insights into the brand’s hugely successful strategy.

For those that might not be familiar with Clogau, what can you tell us about the company and your connection to Welsh gold?

Clogau is a second generation family business based in Wales. Every piece we create contains rare Welsh gold – the ‘Gold of Royalty’ for over 100 years. Our heritage evolved in the hills of Snowdonia when gold was found in the Clogau St. David’s gold mine over 150 years ago.

This mine was the largest and richest of its kind. The first major link between Welsh gold and the British Royal Family began on 13th July 1911 when Prince Edward I was officially invested as Prince of Wales in a special ceremony at Caernarfon Castle on the fringes of Snowdonia, North Wales.

Great Vine Earrings by Clogau.

A gift of rare Welsh gold dating from the closure of the Clogau St. David’s gold mine in 1911 has been used to create wedding rings for some members of the British Royal Family, a tradition that began in 1923 with the Queen Mother, then later The Queen, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, and the late Princess Diana.

Other members of the royal family to have Welsh gold wedding rings include Prince Charles and Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, and most recently, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

The Clogau brand was founded in 1989 with just five pieces of jewellery. Now, over 25 years later we continue to celebrate our heritage with customers across the globe with over 400 pieces of iconic jewellery all containing rare Welsh gold – identifiable by the Welsh dragon and Clogau stamp.

You recently purchased a mine in Wales. What can you tell us about this and why is it important for the brand to have this hands-on experience?

Welsh gold occurs naturally in two distinct areas of Wales. One area is in North Wales in a band stretching from Barmouth past Dolgellau and up towards Snowdonia. This was mined at several mines, the largest of which were the Gwynfynydd Gold Mine near Ganllwyd and the Clogau Gold Mine near Bontddu. In South Wales it is found in a small area in the valley of the River Cothi at Dolaucothi where it is known to have been mined by the Romans.

In 2015 my family (the Roberts family) bought the Gwynfynydd gold mine with the intention of mining again in the not so distant future. Gold was first discovered at Gwynfynydd in 1863, during the period in the 1860’s referred to as “The Welsh Gold Rush”and was last extracted in 1998. A donation of one kilogram of Welsh gold from the Gwynfynydd mine was made to the Queen on her 60th birthday in 1986.

This authenticity and provenance is key to Clogau’s success. Our heritage is what sets us apart for both retailer and customer; the connection to the royal family, the permanent ties to Wales and of course the sentiments celebrated in all of the collections make Clogau a collectable brand, an heirloom that families pass down their generations.

What can you tell us about the new collections you will launch at IJL 2018?

The new pieces for autumn and winter 2018 highlight the beauty of Welsh flora and fauna.

The Lyra Collection

In a clear night sky, more than a thousand stars shine in eighty-eight constellations. The twinkling Lyra is one such constellation and represents the lyre – a musical instrument with strings used in antiquity.

Clogau Lyra Collection
The Lyra Collection by Clogau.

In Wales, Lyra is known as King Arthur’s Harp (Talyn Arthur) or King David’s Harp. This unique and symbolic design beautifully incorporates 9ct yellow and rose gold, and is set with diamonds.

The Tudor Collection

Hampton Court Palace – the heart of the Tudor Court – was the majestic home of the flamboyant King Henry VIII. The exquisite Tudor Court collection, set with sparkling white topaz, is inspired by the intricate carvings on Anne Boleyn’s Gateway, a lasting reminder of one of the most famous and compelling love stories in royal British history.

Dinas Emrys

The 6th century monarch, King Vortigern chose Dinas Emrys as the location to build his castle. As the castle walls crumbled, King Vortigern sought help from Myrddin Emrys, also known as Merlin, the wizard.

Merlin told of two dragons held by magic in a secret lake beneath the hill that caused the walls to fall. King Vortigern and his men dug into the mountain where they found the red and white dragons locked in combat. The Red Dragon prevailed and has been celebrated in Wales ever since. This incredible legend is celebrated in new pieces, which will be shown at IJL 2018.

Meander

The meander motif took its name from the river Meander, noted for its exceptionally winding and twisting path. Meander was the most important symbol in ancient Greece, because of its connotations with unity and infinity; the continuous interlocking lines and repeated motif reflects the fluid movement of the ocean wave, and thus the eternal flow of things. Our unique Meander jewellery pieces symbolise the everlasting bonds of friendship, love and devotion in this elegant design.

Clogau’s brand new pieces for autumn/winter will be launching in early August.

How quickly has Clogau grown in recent years and what do you credit to your success?

Clogau is a dynamic brand with an unparalleled provenance and deep ties to Welsh history. We continue to stay true to their Welsh heritage and have successfully translated what could be interpreted as a niche product into one that is internationally appealing and highly commercial.

It is this brand DNA that allows Clogau to enjoy exceptional growth through its multiple channels to market and has an unprecedented benefit to our retailers, especially our valued independent stores.

Having won the awards for Best Multichannel Retail Offer and Jewellery & Watch Supplier of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards this year, our growth has been encouraged by a combination of factors. Travel Retail is Clogau’s fastest growing channel, listed on Virgin Atlantic, Tui Airways, Lufthansa, airBaltic, Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, Malaysia airlines, Hong Kong airlines, Hong Kong Express, Air Macau, Peach airlines, and Asiana airlines. Plus a number of key international airports stock Clogau, such as Manchester, Newcastle, Cardiff, Marrakech Haikou Meilan, Myanmar airport and Kuala Lumpur airport.

We also currently sell on seven P&O Cruise ships with dedicated POS furniture; three Cunard ships including the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and Queen Victoria; and four Fred Olsen ships, two Saga ships and six Marella cruises (Tui).

What advice would Clogau have for smaller brands or emerging designers exhibiting at IJL for the first time?

As Clogau business has grown over the last 25 years, our retailer support remains of paramount importance to us. From new and innovative point of sale (POS) support to the interactive Tree of Knowledge and e-learning, plus a brand new Partner Support website being developed, our retailers are at the very heart of the brand and this is continually recognized by all at Clogau.

We rely heavily on our retailers to share the Clogau story with their customers and explain why it is so rare and special.

Therefore the advice we would give any smaller brands or emerging designers is to celebrate your brand pillars, your USPs, and ensure the support is consistent to all channels to market to promote appropriately. It is important that this message is clear at all touch points for every customer.

Finally, why does Clogau exhibit at IJL and what is it about the show that works for you?

IJL is a fantastic platform for us to touch base with existing and prospective retail partners. The show is a great opportunity for us to launch our autumn and winter collections, as well as new marketing campaigns, brand updates and of course our upcoming Christmas promotion.
