#IJL2018 Day One – The Highlights!

At 10am today International jewellery London, the global meeting place for the jewellery industry, got underway! Jewellery professionals from around the world flooded in, all here to see heritage and the cutting edge combine through innovation, design, beauty, skill and vision. Here is a look inside IJL 2018.

Emerging UK designers…
First-up today was a look at emerging UK talent, when 6 up-and-coming designers, selected as winners by the National Association of Jewellers and IJL, had the chance to showcase their work in the prestigious Kickstarter Design Gallery.

We caught-up with one of the winners, Ruth Chipper of Ruth Mary Jewellery to find out more about the initiative and her business.

Business, business, business….
Day one of IJL once again proved to be the place that brings together the right people, at the right time in the right place to grow UK and international jewellery businesses. The halls were a hive of activity throughout the day, here is a look at just some of the action.

A trend towards bigger coloured stones…
Today’s visitors were treated to an all-encompassing range of inspiration and ideas across IJL’s comprehensive education programme and array of innovative exhibitors. Early today we caught up with Jai Khandelwal of Sunshine Exim to find out what’s new in the coloured stone market, here is what he had to say.

Earlier today IJL welcomed Miss Universe GB 2018, Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers to the show floor. Dee-Ann stopped by the Cara Jewellery stand (D145) to tell us more about how they work together.

IJL Welcomes More Diamond Club Buyers – Up 23% For 2018

IJL has had 23% uplift in pre-registered Diamond Club jewellery buyers due to attend the Show in 2018.

16 more countries will be represented with buyers coming from all over the globe including; US, China, France, India.

IJL’s Diamond Club hosts top senior international and UK buyers, suppliers and retailers – representing the leading UK and international independent and multiple retailers, department stores, high-end fashion boutiques, multiple jewellery retailers, airlines, museums, galleries and online-only stores.

At IJL new figures will be released on worldwide jewellery spend from Euromonitor International, which predict worldwide retail market to top USD $331bn by the end of 2018. IJL welcomes jewellery industry to London with three days of events, business, trends, networking, and jewellery launches

28 August 2018: IJL, the UK’s Leading Jewellery Trade Event, opens on Sunday 2 September and will welcome a host some of the biggest names in UK jewellery design to the show.

IJL events programme featuring designers include:-

  • Uniquely UK event, Monday 3 September, 12pm @IJL: Uniquely UK, new for 2018, curated by GC&DC will feature an exhibition of inspiring signature pieces from some of the UK’s leading jewellery designers. In addition to the exhibition several of these designers, including Stephen Webster, Ornella Iannuzzi, Theo Fennell, Sarah Herriot, Leo de Vroomen, Tomasz Donocik, David Fowkes, Ute Decker and Bobby White will attend a special IJL Catwalk Show on Monday 3 September at 12.00.
  • Fei Liu Jewellery will be exhibiting and Fei Liu himself will be talking at IJL about building jewellery brands in the expanding Chinese jewellery market on Monday morning. 3 September at 10am.

Blog Awards

The IJL Blog Awards, a brand-new initiative designed to celebrate social media influencers and their important contribution to the international jewellery industry, will reveal the shortlist and winners of the UK Social Influencer and Social Influencer based outside of the UK at 5pm Sunday 2 September on The Catwalk Theatre.

 

Spotlight on Birmingham

This new feature will provide a spotlight on one UK or world jewellery hub each year. This year Spotlight on Birmingham exhibit will be opened by The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Yvonne Mosquito, on Sunday 2 September. It is a collaboration of industry, education and commerce; from the Assay Office Birmingham to the manufacturers, designers, wholesalers and retailers and will be chance to showcase the city with 1000 trades role within the jewellery industry. Work from the Birmingham School of Jewellery will be on show to demonstrate the diversity of their talent and educational reach – from horology to 3D printed jewellery.

 

A window on retail

Retail and customer experience will be centre stage at IJL this year with retail windows on display around the champagne bar. IJL will announce retailers and designers who will be showcasing the art of window dressing shortly. IJL will also be exploring digital retail opportunities with seminars including, “Think Like a Customer in a Digital World”.

 

Bridal Showcase

International Jewellery London (IJL) will be celebrating bridal jewellery and the strength of the bridal jewellery market at a special Bridal Showcase. This show floor bridal feature, sponsored by award-winning British fine jewellery manufacturer Hockley Mint, will give an insight into key bridal trends, allowing buyers to meet with leaders in the sector.

Jewellery not just for gifting: Rise in Woman Buying Jewellery for Themselves Adds Sparkle to UK Fine Jewellery Sales

  • UK fine jewellery sales grew to £3.2billion in 2017*
  • Predicted to rise to £3.3billion by end of 2018, up 12% in five years*

PRESS RELEASE. LONDON: 31 August 2018: The retail value of the UK fine jewellery industry rose for the fourth successive year to a high of GBP£3.2billion in 2017, Euromonitor International, a market research provider, will reveal at International Jewellery London, the UK’s leading jewellery trade show, on Sunday 2 September.

According to Euromonitor, all categories of fine jewellery; rings, neckwear, wristwear and earrings have grown, with necklaces showing the largest (10%) uplift over the 2014 – 2018 period. Overall, rings are still the biggest category of fine jewellery sales in the UK worth £1.39bn in 2017, predicted to rise further to £1.435bn by the end of 2018, while watches saw the slowest growth with 2% retail value increase in 2017.

UK Jewellery industry retail value is predicted to rise again in 2018 to reach GBP £3.3 billion.

Journalist and former British Vogue editor, Alexandra Shulman, writing in International Jewellery London Inspire magazine, commented: “The new big sector in the jewellery market is women buying for themselves. No longer do we feel… a piece is somehow of greater worth if it has been gifted. Instead fine jewellery is becoming one of the most popular ways women reward themselves for a moment of career success, or celebrate a personal event.”

Jewellery not just for gifting: Rise in Woman Buying Jewellery for Themselves Adds Sparkle to UK Fine Jewellery Sales

PRESS RELEASE. LONDON: 31 August 2018: The retail value of the UK fine jewellery industry rose for the fourth successive year to a high of GBP£3.2billion in 2017, Euromonitor International, a market research provider, will reveal at International Jewellery London, the UK’s leading jewellery trade show, on Sunday 2 September.

According to Euromonitor, all categories of fine jewellery; rings, neckwear, wristwear and earrings have grown, with necklaces showing the largest (10%) uplift over the 2014 – 2018 period. Overall, rings are still the biggest category of fine jewellery sales in the UK worth £1.39bn in 2017, predicted to rise further to £1.435bn by the end of 2018, while watches saw the slowest growth with 2% retail value increase in 2017.

UK Jewellery industry retail value is predicted to rise again in 2018 to reach GBP £3.3 billion.

Journalist and former British Vogue editor, Alexandra Shulman, writing in International Jewellery London Inspire magazine, commented: “The new big sector in the jewellery market is women buying for themselves. No longer do we feel… a piece is somehow of greater worth if it has been gifted. Instead fine jewellery is becoming one of the most popular ways women reward themselves for a moment of career success, or celebrate a personal event.”
