Raw Pearls, one of the UK’s leading pearl jewellery suppliers, have just
released the third installment of their online training programme, Pearl Academy by Raw Pearls.
Part 3 is called ‘Types of Cultured
Pearl’ and looks at the different types of saltwater pearls, and freshwater
pearls. In this chapter you’ll discover where these pearls would likely come
from, what sizes you’d typically expect to find them in, and what natural
colours you’d expect to see them in.
With the pearl trend set to surge this
summer, shop floor sales staff need to know the basics about pearls, in order
to sell them. Miranda Raw of Raw Pearls says “We need to tell this organic
gem’s story and make people aware of how versatile they can be. These films
give bitesize chunks of information and are available with accompanying notes,
so it’s a great way of immersing yourselves in this summer’s biggest trend.”
IJL announces 6 winners of the 10th KickStart competition for up and coming designers.
International Jewellery London (IJL), long-established and world-leading
jewellery trade event, has announced the six winning designers named as the
2019 IJL KickStarters.
The annual mentoring programme is recognised by the industry as one of
the most successful bursary programmes for emerging talent. The initiative
involves six of the best up and coming UK-based jewellery designers, who have
been trading for more than 12 months, giving them access to a mentoring
package, workshop days, ongoing pricing, branding and marketing support,
introductions to key industry figures – and a presence at IJL 2019.
Katie
Morris, IJL Exhibition Director said: “Congratulations
to all six KickStart 2019 designers. We are thrilled to take them on this
journey to enhancing their profile and pushing their business to the next
level. Exhibiting at IJL positions these young designers at the heart of the
biggest industry showcase in the UK, opening doors to new opportunities,
expertise and networks for growing their brand and design practise.”
The KickStart 2019 winners are: Aurelie Dellasanta, Aurelie Dellasanta Jewellery Becca Macdonald, Becca Macdonald Studio Bine Roth, Bine Roth Jewellery Hannah Blackwood, Hannah Blackwood Jewellery Lukas Grewenig, Lukas Grewenig Jewellery Vanessa Pederzani, Heirloom Jewels
Aurelie Dellasanta (MA Royal College of Art) is an award-winning Swiss-French jewellery designer based in London. She decided to launch her brand AURELIE DELLASANTA JEWELLERY following a career of creating unique contemporary designs which have been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums such as MAD New York, LACMA Los Angeles and COLLECT in London. Her last collection URBAN ANIMALS showcases a series of animals adorned with human elements inspired by punk culture. Mohawks, spikes and dangling charms are finely handcrafted by Aurelie, to give these cute creatures a unique edgy style, and turn them into timeless fairytale-like treasures.

Commenting on being selected, Aurelie said: “I am really excited to have been selected as one of the KickStart designers 2019. This is the perfect opportunity to present my brand to a wider audience, find new stockists and meet other designers! I am really looking forward to learning a lot from that experience, as this will be my first Trade at an industry show. Thank you IJL team for your support and trust!”
A background in textiles, ceramics and sculpture influences Becca’s jewellery practice. A common theme throughout her work is documenting the ‘evidence of presence’ and human traces. With an interest in both fluid movement and organic shape, she explores the space where liquid becomes solid and hard meets soft. Due to the transient nature of her making process, every piece of jewellery is totally unique. A fleeting gesture and moment of movement is permanently preserved and transformed into a distinctive piece of wearable art. In a digital world, Becca’s pieces evoke a sense of being, her jewellery tells a story of human presence.

Bine Roth’s jewellery plays with our senses with the ultimate focus on movement and wearability. The designs are characterised by a combination of strong shapes combined with a serene lightness of movable chains which allow the designs to dance on the body. Innovative and daring, timeless and traditional sometimes understated sometimes extravagant.

Bine said: “Being selected for KickStart is a fantastic opportunity for my new brand to meet international buyers, galleries as well as fellow designers. I am delighted to be one of the chosen ones for IJL and be given the golden ticket to get my business up to the next level.”
Hannah’s
award winning Tempus Fugit collection is inspired by the Memento Mori of the
15th to 17th century. The aim of the collection is to inspire the wearer to
make the most of everyday and to live like it was their last day. Hannah
marries traditional jewellery making with the latest computer assisted design
techniques in the creation of her pieces.

On being named a KickStart 2019 designer, Hannah said: “I’m thrilled to have been selected for KickStart 2019. I can’t wait to show my pieces to a wider audience and to learn as much as possible, to take my business to the next level.”
The curiosity for the materials and crafts that Lukas Grewenig developed growing up defines the basis for his brand LUKASCASPAR jewellery. Innovation plays a big role in his first collection which features newly developed stone cuts, clever catches and a patent pending technique that makes symbols and images magically appear on some of the pieces.

work at IJL was a long time goal and I am really looking forward to the
contacts and feedback from the visitors. And It is fantastic that we will
benefit from the business support in the run up!”
Milan-born, London-based jewellery designer Vanessa Pederzani creates unusual and effervescent fine jewellery. In keeping with her whimsical and vibrant personality, she enjoys giving shapes to whatever catches her eye. There is gentleness at times, playfulness, and boldness at others, but all her pieces have in common distinctive craftsmanship and unpredictable charm. Using different overtones of diamonds, rubies and coloured sapphires, she moulds precious war helmets, corsets, bats and scorpions. It’s a life story with an intense duality: femininity and gameness.

A trained gemologist, who honed her expertise at Pederzani Jewellery, her family business founded in Milan in 1947, and then at Christie’s and Sotheby’s, before striking out on her own, Vanessa exercises a unique approach. Her passion for coloured gemstones, nature, and details, inspires her to create unique jewels that resemble miniature art pieces. Her clients, mostly women buying a piece of jewellery for themselves, range from lovers of edgy design to those seeking something more elegant and classic with a twist. Vanessa thinks of her jewellery as a timeless final touch to express the “joie de vivre” of her followers.
On finding out she was selected as a KickStart designer, Vanessa said: “I discovered I was to be part of the next 6 KickStarters by email, and it was some of the most exciting news to receive as I have been feeling a bit stuck in my business. I am really looking forward to the training day and to September at IJL! I am sure it will be an invaluable experience and chance to receive useful feedback.”
Each designer will receive a bursary funded directly by the Benevolent Society, to assist with London transport and accommodation costs, plus the opportunity to join The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), a professional membership body that delivers internationally recognised qualifications, and bespoke business mentoring, at a discounted rate.
KickStart, created by jewellery industry hub IJL and trade body the
National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), has over the past ten years, helped
more than 85 contemporary designers launch their careers and get an
all-important foot in the door. KickStart alumni have gone on to have
impressive careers in the jewellery sector.
IJL 2018 welcomed 500 exhibitors from 39 countries including 15 new countries ranging from South Korea, Czech Republic, Peru and Colombia to Qatar and Sierra Leone. IJL’s Diamond Club, which hosts the biggest international buyers, saw attendance up by 60% on 2017, with new attendees in 2018 from Canada and Jersey.
Award winning designer Lucy Quartermaine and Derbyshire based stockist Merchants Jewellers collaborated in a Charity evening for ‘Children First Derby ’ on Friday 22nd March who work with young people and families to make a positive impact in their lives and within the local community.
Merchants jewellers attended the evening in support of the charity showing pieces from their Lucy Quartermaine collections, donations being made to the charity from each sale made. Designer Lucy Quartermaine provided her iconic statement designs to the event, which took place at The Riverside Centre, Derby, for their catwalk show exhibiting day and evening looks which included major clothing brands Gillian Hart, Phase Eight, Vivienne Westwood and Monsoon. The evening raised a total of £4300 including 20% of Lucy Quartermaine sales donated to the fantastic cause.
Tanita merchant, Director at Merchants Jewellers commented, ‘We were very pleased to be a part of the night and to help towards raising money towards a charity that helps local families. We wanted to collaborate with Lucy Quartermaine as they do stunning statement pieces that gave each outfit that finishing touch. We have a great relationship with the brand, and they were more than happy to help in any way they could and helped us raise money on the night for the charity. We will continue to do more in the future for causes that are close to our hearts’.
Lucy Quartermaine commented, ‘I am honoured that we can be involved in events like this one for such a fantastic cause. I was delighted when our wonderful stockist Merchants Jewellers chose my designs to be showcased and the response from the attendees was very positive.’
Fashion Revolution Week is here and what an impact it has made already. Our social media feeds are filled with people asking the question #WhoMadeMyClothes and #WhoMadeMyJewellery prompting designers and brands across the globe to provide transparency on how their products are made.
The Fashion Revolution launched in the UK in 2013 in response to the Rana Plaza Factory building collapse which killed more than 1,138 people and injured many more – Fashion Revolution Week falls on the 24th April, the anniversary of the tragedy. It has been designed to scrutinise industry practices and emphasise the need for transparency in the supply chain, while also celebrating the positive influence of fashion and the rise in ethically and sustainably made items.
Four years ago the Fashion Revolution welcomed jewellers and jewellery consumers into the campaign and encouraged them to ask ‘Who Made My Jewellery’. With Fairtrade gold and ethical jewellery in higher demand than ever before it is clear that people are now looking to make positive changes to unfair practices that may have once been unknown or ignored. Fairtrade gold has made a real difference to the lives of miners and their communities with fair wages being paid and money being invested into building their communities future.
In recent industry news we have seen The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) launch a new code of practices which define responsible, social and environmental business practices for businesses in the jewellery supply chain; Jewellery collective ‘Fair Luxury’ joined forces with Fashion Revolution to support the campaign and promote it widely amongst the jewellery industry; and new firm V&V launched a free guide to help brands understand Fairmined and Fairtrade gold schemes. This alone highlights how important this issue has become within the jewellery industry and how much is being done to raise awareness and tackle it.
The ‘WhoMadeMyJewellery’ and ‘IMadeYourJewellery’ campaigns allow everyone from designer makers, brands and stone cutters to manufacturers and miners to highlight responsible practices and bring more transparency to the jewellery industry.
#IMadeYourJewellery
To name but a few of the pioneers in the jewellery industry that are using ethically produced materials and showing you exactly who made your jewellery. These brands, both past and present exhibitors of IJL, are truly leading the way in creating a more transparent, ethical and fair industry.
Dinny Hall Jewellery joined the Fashion Revolution Week campaign to highlight their passion for making the industry fairer, safer, cleaner and more transparent. Dinny and her team oversee the entire production process and the finished pieces are made by master goldsmiths trained by Dinny herself. Dinny Hall is also known for using only genuine gemstones chosen from responsible sources.
IJL 2018 Kickstarter, Natalie Perry, has won awards for her ethical and sustainable luxury jewellery collections. Each piece of Natalie Perry jewellery is made using Fairtrade Gold, recycled silver and ethically-sourced gemstones.
Leading casting house, Weston Beamor, took to instagram to show their support for the #IMadeYourJewellery campaign to highlight the importance of knowing where your jewellery is made and choosing responsibly produced products and materials. Weston Beamor cast 18ct yellow and white Fairtrade and Fairmined gold for customers registered with the Fairtrade Foundation.
Ute Decker joined us as part of the Uniquely UK showcase at IJL 2018 and showcased her award-winning Spiral Neck Sculpture made from 100% recycled sterling silver. Ute is renowned for her ethical collections, all made from only the finest sustainable materials and was one of the first jewellers in the world to launch a collection in Fairtrade gold!
Naturally organic, virtually renewable and environmentally friendly – the pearl is perfectly suited to the cause. Longstanding IJL exhibitor and fine pearl jewellery supplier, Raw Pearls, hand-select all of their pearls, sourcing each one internationally from pearls farms and string almost all of their jewellery in their Somerset workshops.
Here at IJL we proudly support and showcase many brands that highlight some of the best in ethical and sustainable design from brands such as Gecko and Hockley Mint to Ora Pearls and Mazayen. We are also delighted to announce that Fairtrade Foundation will be joining us on stand B38 and will also be sponsoring the Inspiration Theatre so do make sure to stop by and be inspired by Fairtrade.
