Trend report: The top trends from the BAFTA TV awards 2019

Sunday night saw another red carpet affair as the stars took to the stage for the 2019 BAFTA Television Awards.

‘Less is more’ was definitely key in terms of jewellery with many opting for just one statement piece to adorn their look. Diamonds were the stone of the night and came in all shapes and sizes – from serpentine necklaces to chunky, layered bracelets – the stars were certainly shining.

Take a look at some of our favourite styles!

The ladies from hit show Killing Eve kept it simple with pieces that perfectly complimented their elegant gowns. Leading Actress winner, Jodie Comer, opted for simple rose gold and diamond bracelets by Italian brand, Pomellato; writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge paired her powder blue dress with a classic earring; and best supporting actress, Fiona Shaw, teamed her royal blue gown with some statement diamond earrings.

Maya Jama made a statement in Bulgari’s sparkling Serpenti Necklace.

Tess Daly played it cool in a simple pair of gold hoops and chunky ring from London based designer, Georgina Scott.

Diamonds are a girls best friend – as was evident in Scarlett Moffatt’s case. She paired her gorgeous polka dot gown with a stunning suite of diamonds.

Simple, elegant sparkles were also favoured by Holly Willoughby, who teamed her stunning look with a pair of boodles earrings and a Stephen Webster bracelet.

David Morris was the jeweller of choice for Suranne Jones. She teamed her Alexis Mabille tuxedo dress with rose gold, diamond floral motif earrings and watch both from David Morris.

Georgia May Foote wowed with a beautiful pair of Sarah Zhuang Jewellery (nominated for the UKJA 2019 Young Designer of the Year award) diamond and pearl ‘Mermaid Earrings’.

IJL Inspired: Interview with Katharina Kraus, IJL Bright Young Gem Alumni

Inspired by the architecture of cityscapes, Kathy Kraus Fine Jewellery limited edition pieces are each handcrafted with great attention to detail and made with sustainable and ethical materials.

Since graduating in 2018 fine jewellery designer, Katharina Kraus, has gone from strength to strength and her work has been exhibited at Milan Fashion Week, the Goldsmiths’ Hall and also as part of our Bright Young Gem initative in September 2018.

We caught up with the fresh, exciting new designer, Katharina Kraus, herself, and spoke about inspiration, trends and how becoming a Bright Young Gem helped to launch her jewellery career.

How did you find out about Bright Young Gems and what made you want to apply?

I found out via the IJL Instagram Account. By the time Bright Young Gems happened I had just graduated from Central Saint Martins and it was the perfect platform to showcase my jewels to a broader, professional audience, potential stockists and buyers. I also loved exhibiting amongst such a talented group of jewellers.

What would be your advice to other recent graduates or final year students who are thinking of entering Bright Young Gems?

My advice would be to really think about what you would want from the event and how to best achieve it. Be strategic about the steps you need to take to accomplish your set goal. Beautiful jewels are important but there are so many organizational things, which go into making exhibiting at a tradeshow successful. Luckily we had a fantastic day to prepare with the team from IJL.

How do you think Bright Young Gems helped with where you are now? Did it help you on your journey to success?

Yes, taking part in Bright Young Gems did help move my career forward. It was great to meet potential stockists, buyers and press in such a well-organized show. I’d say that the connections I made with my fellow Bright Young Gems and Kickstarters are the most valuable. It is such a fantastic event to learn and to learn from each other because we are all at different stages in our career.

What are your top jewellery trend tips for the approaching spring season?

Long drop earrings with sleek silhouettes and playful colours in gemstone and material combinations. Hoops are one jewellery trend that will never go out of style and rosegold also looks like its here to stay.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My main inspiration for creating new work comes from the architecture of cityscapes, the patterns skyscrapers form against the ever-changing sky, the contrast between endless sky and stone, glass and concrete.

Finally, how is your jewellery industry career or brand progressing and what are you hoping to achieve in the future?

My jewellery career has been going very well and 2019 is already off to an incredibly busy start. This year alone I have exhibited at Milan Fashion Week, curated an exhibition for Munich Jewellery Week and my jewels will soon be on exhibition in Brazil and Hong Kong. This autumn I will also launch my new fine jewellery collection.

Trend Report: The top trends spotted at the Met Gala 2019

Last night, 6th May 2019, marked the biggest night in fashion – the annual Met Gala – and saw some of the most famous faces from the fashion, film, music and arts dressed-up in the most outrageous, fantastic and beautifully crafted creations for the night. The theme for 2019 was Camp: Notes on Fashion and was celebrated with an extravagant, flamboyant and fabulously fun array of fashion and particularly jewellery.

Take a look below and discover some of the bling that stole the show.

Heavenly Headwear

Elaborate, bejewelled, showstopping … all words that could be associated with the headdresses that stormed the pink carpet. The dramatic pieces, as seen on Gemma Chan, Winnie Harlow, Dakota Johnson and Billy Porter – to name but a few, channelled an elegance and flamboyancy that interpreted the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme with astonishing flair.

Wrist Action

Bracelets and cuffs were worn stacked up the arms across the board. From tribal style wood and black diamond bangles worn by Joan Smalls, gem encrusted bracelets that trailed up the length of Bella Hadid’s cocktail gloves to the diamond encrusted cuffs that were worn heavy and plenty embellishing the likes of Naomi Campbell, Priyanka Chopra and Gabriella Union-Wade-Dundas.

The Bigger the Gem the Better

A cocktail of rainbow coloured gemstones was also on the menu last night. Stones came big, bright and beautiful and were displayed in a variety of ways – from body chains draped over Gwen Stefani and Jeremy Scott, spread across fingers as seen on Elle Fanning and delicately strung around the neck in stunning designs as seen on J-Lo and Kendall Jenner.

Cloaked in Jewels

Wings made of gold, crystals and jewels; a cloak of pearls; diamond encrusted body armour… all these looks were adorned by the pink carpet celebs. Florence Welch stunned in a cape of crystals while Saoirse Ronan wore bejewelled wing-like shoulders; Jared Leto, carrying his own head, wore a body of diamonds and gems but Ryan Murphy stole the show in a cape encrusted with pearls in a nod to Liberace.

A Pop of Collar

Collars of gems snaked their way around the necks of many. A few of the stand out pieces included the stunning diamond and yellow gold butterfly that topped off Lady Gaga’s incredible four costume changes; Lupita Nyong’o complimented her candy coloured wings with a heritage emerald and amethyst collar; and the lady of the hour – Anna Wintour – styled her beautiful pink feather cape and floral beaded Chanel gown with a chunky, floral motif collar.

The Rise of the Pearl

The classic pearl continues its rebirth as the high fashion jewel to be taking notice of this year. It encrusted capes, as seen above on Ryan Murphy, studded headdresses, was worn as a single earring as modelled by Harry Styles and was even fashioned into a corset worn over Ezra Miller’s suit.

Ringing Around

The simple ring was perhaps the biggest trend from the pink carpet last night. Worn stacked and spread across multiple fingers the look was seen on many with candy cocktail rings dripping on Elle Fanning, chunky emeralds studding Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele both wearing handfuls of colourful creations.
