Trend Report: The top trends spotted at the Met Gala 2019

Last night, 6th May 2019, marked the biggest night in fashion – the annual Met Gala – and saw some of the most famous faces from the fashion, film, music and arts dressed-up in the most outrageous, fantastic and beautifully crafted creations for the night. The theme for 2019 was Camp: Notes on Fashion and was celebrated with an extravagant, flamboyant and fabulously fun array of fashion and particularly jewellery.

Take a look below and discover some of the bling that stole the show.

Heavenly Headwear

Elaborate, bejewelled, showstopping … all words that could be associated with the headdresses that stormed the pink carpet. The dramatic pieces, as seen on Gemma Chan, Winnie Harlow, Dakota Johnson and Billy Porter – to name but a few, channelled an elegance and flamboyancy that interpreted the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme with astonishing flair.

Wrist Action

Bracelets and cuffs were worn stacked up the arms across the board. From tribal style wood and black diamond bangles worn by Joan Smalls, gem encrusted bracelets that trailed up the length of Bella Hadid’s cocktail gloves to the diamond encrusted cuffs that were worn heavy and plenty embellishing the likes of Naomi Campbell, Priyanka Chopra and Gabriella Union-Wade-Dundas.

The Bigger the Gem the Better

A cocktail of rainbow coloured gemstones was also on the menu last night. Stones came big, bright and beautiful and were displayed in a variety of ways – from body chains draped over Gwen Stefani and Jeremy Scott, spread across fingers as seen on Elle Fanning and delicately strung around the neck in stunning designs as seen on J-Lo and Kendall Jenner.

Cloaked in Jewels

Wings made of gold, crystals and jewels; a cloak of pearls; diamond encrusted body armour… all these looks were adorned by the pink carpet celebs. Florence Welch stunned in a cape of crystals while Saoirse Ronan wore bejewelled wing-like shoulders; Jared Leto, carrying his own head, wore a body of diamonds and gems but Ryan Murphy stole the show in a cape encrusted with pearls in a nod to Liberace.

A Pop of Collar

Collars of gems snaked their way around the necks of many. A few of the stand out pieces included the stunning diamond and yellow gold butterfly that topped off Lady Gaga’s incredible four costume changes; Lupita Nyong’o complimented her candy coloured wings with a heritage emerald and amethyst collar; and the lady of the hour – Anna Wintour – styled her beautiful pink feather cape and floral beaded Chanel gown with a chunky, floral motif collar.

The Rise of the Pearl

The classic pearl continues its rebirth as the high fashion jewel to be taking notice of this year. It encrusted capes, as seen above on Ryan Murphy, studded headdresses, was worn as a single earring as modelled by Harry Styles and was even fashioned into a corset worn over Ezra Miller’s suit.

Ringing Around

The simple ring was perhaps the biggest trend from the pink carpet last night. Worn stacked and spread across multiple fingers the look was seen on many with candy cocktail rings dripping on Elle Fanning, chunky emeralds studding Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele both wearing handfuls of colourful creations.
