Raw Pearls, UK Jewellery Awards Finalist 2019, will celebrate
what has been an impressive year for pearls in the consumer press with an
exciting stock clearance sale at this year’s IJL.
Director, Miranda Raw, said “This is a huge opportunity to

The curiosity for the materials and crafts that Lukas Grewenig developed growing up defines the basis for his brand LUKASCASPAR jewellery. Innovation plays a big role in his first collection which features newly developed stone cuts, clever catches and a patent pending technique that makes symbols and images magically appear on some of the pieces.
We caught up with Lukas ahead of IJL 2019 to discuss his collections, inspirations and KickStart experience.
What made you want to apply to be a KickStarter at IJL 2019?
I have visited the IJL every year since I moved to London and when I launched my collection last year it was clear, that one of my goals would be to exhibit there as well. A few friends of mine were part of the Kickstarter program in 2018 and they were very happy afterward with how it helped them develop their network and grow their business.
What are you most looking forward to during your KickStart experience?
Naturally I am looking forward to showing my new collection to a large audience of industry professionals and hope I will get a lot of valuable feedback. In the last year my focus has been mostly on selling to private client and exhibiting at events like Goldsmith’s Fair or other end customer shows. So for the IJL my main goals are to further establish my brand, expand my professional network and get to know potential retailers that could show my work in the whole of the UK but I am also looking forward to have a good time with my fellow “Kickstarters”.
Tell us about where you get your inspiration from?
When I started designing this collection I was fascinated by the romanticism of Victorian sentimental jewellery. I took some element of this and contrasted them with the modern aesthetic that I drew from my research into technical geometries. One of the most exciting influences for the collection was a surface structure that I developed which enables me to hide images or symbols in the pieces.
Tell us a little about the work you will be bringing to IJL 2019?
In my design process I am always guided by my curiosity for the crafts. I look at every step and component that goes into the making and include subtle technical details to refine and elevate the overall look of my jewellery. My first collection “Victoria” for example features hand carved gemstones, special faceted cuts, unique setting techniques and a newly developed clasp among other innovations. My goal is always to use the craftsmanship in a way that it never becomes too prominent. It has to be used so skilfully that it almost becomes invisible.
When did you first discover your love of jewellery?
I grew up in a family of jewellers and I spend a lot of my childhood in my grandparents and parents workshops. So the love for the Materials and the craftsmanship that my parents had must have been passed on when I was still growing up.
If you had to summarise your brand in a couple of words, what would you use?

has today announced the shortlist for its Leading Lights Awards, a new feature
initiative for IJL 2019, created to celebrate the innovation, craftsmanship,
design and distribution of fashion forward talent across the globe.
IJL
has teamed up with the respected publication, Jewellery Outlook, to offer the
opportunity of gaining recognition for contributions to a forward-looking
global jewellery industry.
There
are eight categories, with entries submitted by organisations or individuals
themselves, or nominated by a third party. The winners will be announced in a
special ceremony at IJL 2019.

How long have you been designing jewellery for?

Philip’s interest in making jewellery started when as a schoolboy, he built his first furnace in his dads shed. His interest quickly became an intriguing self-taught hobby, that earnt him a place at the Hatton Garden, Holts Academy, to study jewellery design and manufacturing processes. Kirsty’s specific interest and skills lay is graphic design and illustration with 4 years’ experience prior to joining the business and a further 4 years dedicated to jewellery production designing.
How long have you been in business?

Jewels has operated for almost 4 years working from the ground up, developing
unique design and manufacturing processes to establish a brand.
What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?

Apart
from developing an array of really technically challenging and interesting
bespoke ordered jewellery, we have to say that a recent proud moment, was
producing a uniquely designed logo ring for the English pop-rock band, the
Hoosiers. We also made a guitar pick prop for their comedy show, Felix and the
Scootermen and for their Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows.
Tell us about where you get your inspiration from?
The
craftmanship of jewellery in the Ancient world is incredible, detailed and even
presenting detailed stories, events and sheer beauty, whether the Assyrian, Egyptian,
Roman or Greek cultures, they all have their own identifiable distinctive
styles.
What can people expect to see from you at IJL 2019?

are incredibly excited to present unique handcrafted jewellery presenting
distant times by
walking into modern development methods, still reflecting historical beauty not
widely seen in today’s jewellery market.
What are your top jewellery trend tips for the approaching season?
We
both agree that an appreciation for not just historical but ancient style jewellery
is trending. This is particularly seen
within the music industry and the embrace of Egyptian art. We recognise that the music industry and
celebrity groups are huge and successful promotion platform but whatever we
make, customers simply adore attention to delicate details and bespoke
manufacturing.
When did you first discover your love of jewellery?

Philip’s
hobby has always focussed on metals, casting methods and jewellery patterns, so
whilst studying for a foundation degree in automotive engineering, his passion
and obsession for designing and manufacturing jewellery was greatly stoked as
he explored the study of casting methods used in engineering industries. This
has translated into our designing and casting our own jewellery, using
perforated vacuum casting techniques. The inspiration for designing jewellery
based on ancient civilisations came from Philips curiosity and fascination with
ancient sites such as Sacsayhuamán in Peru and Puma Punku in Bolivia.
Who would you love to see wearing your jewellery?

We
want to see our designs appreciated by everyone but looking towards accessing a
celebrity market, we would be excited about Johnny Depp wearing our jewellery,
as we feel some pieces would really suit his personality and be capture his
curiosity. And who wouldn’t be proud to
know the Her Majesty the Queen and Kate Middleton really appreciated our designs?
If you had to summarise your brand in a couple of words, what would you use?

Jewels has operated for almost 4 years working from the ground up, developing
unique design and manufacturing processes to establish a brand.
What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?

Apart
from developing an array of really technically challenging and interesting
bespoke ordered jewellery, we have to say that a recent proud moment, was
producing a uniquely designed logo ring for the English pop-rock band, the
Hoosiers. We also made a guitar pick prop for their comedy show, Felix and the
Scootermen and for their Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows.
Tell us about where you get your inspiration from?
The
craftmanship of jewellery in the Ancient world is incredible, detailed and even
presenting detailed stories, events and sheer beauty, whether the Assyrian, Egyptian,
Roman or Greek cultures, they all have their own identifiable distinctive
styles.
What can people expect to see from you at IJL 2019?

We
are incredibly excited to present unique handcrafted jewellery presenting
distant times by
walking into modern development methods, still reflecting historical beauty not
widely seen in today’s jewellery market.
What are your top jewellery trend tips for the approaching season?
We
both agree that an appreciation for not just historical but ancient style jewellery
is trending. This is particularly seen
within the music industry and the embrace of Egyptian art. We recognise that the music industry and
celebrity groups are huge and successful promotion platform but whatever we
make, customers simply adore attention to delicate details and bespoke
manufacturing.
When did you first discover your love of jewellery?

Philip’s
hobby has always focussed on metals, casting methods and jewellery patterns, so
whilst studying for a foundation degree in automotive engineering, his passion
and obsession for designing and manufacturing jewellery was greatly stoked as
he explored the study of casting methods used in engineering industries. This
has translated into our designing and casting our own jewellery, using
perforated vacuum casting techniques. The inspiration for designing jewellery
based on ancient civilisations came from Philips curiosity and fascination with
ancient sites such as Sacsayhuamán in Peru and Puma Punku in Bolivia.
Who would you love to see wearing your jewellery?

We
want to see our designs appreciated by everyone but looking towards accessing a
celebrity market, we would be excited about Johnny Depp wearing our jewellery,
as we feel some pieces would really suit his personality and be capture his
curiosity. And who wouldn’t be proud to
know the Her Majesty the Queen and Kate Middleton really appreciated our designs?
If you had to summarise your brand in a couple of words, what would you use?
Ancient
treasures sleeping in time, rebirthed.
What are you looking forward to most about IJL 2019?

Meeting people who are interested in the art of jewellery, enjoying and connecting with like minded producers; developing partnerships and meeting buyers. The show is also a super prestigious event, where we will publicly unveil our brand.
